Time for my vanishing act

Maybe my brain’s still
swimming in Jim Beam,

but I could swear that woman
in the slight black dress is making
severe eye-contact
from across the room.

Yeah, I’m mos-def making up
stories in my head.

Women like that don’t
go for guys like me.

Not for long anyway.

They always see through the smoke
and mirrors eventually
and then they get bored,
just like… pshh!

Now there I go, yet again
thinking about her again.

The one who left me
via text message when shit
got too real for her.

Gutless rejection?
Well, not today, Marlene.
And never again.

Maybe my brain’s still swimming

like that woman is
heading right for me.

She’s older, but still
absolutely smoldering,
even from this far.

Nothing like the one who fled,
ghosting after catching feelings,
but still, just my type.

Just the type who would
crush me under heel as soon
as it was time to get real.

Time for my vanishing act.

I’ll negate eye-contact, blend
with crowded shadows, and wait
by the bar until she gives up
on finding me and — ah shit,

she’s right next to me,
smiling the kind of smile that
demolishes defenses.
