Are You a Creator or a Consumer? Why You Need to Write More than You Read.

Is it possible to write more hours than you read every day? I am not sure. But I am ready to try.

I want to become an independent freelance writer. I have worked with agencies long enough to realize I might never attain true freedom this way. If I do, it will take much longer than I would wish.

Becoming an independent freelance writer, however, requires grit. I need to spend time in the trenches pitching to clients and building a brand. Every potential client wants to see my portfolio. My social proof. They also need an explanation of the ROI of my services.

I read somewhere that there is a difference between being a freelancer and an entrepreneur. Successful freelancers need entrepreneurial skills to help them pitch their services as solutions to clients. It also helps them figure out a business model that eventually sets them free from the rat race.

When you set out on the journey towards freelance writing, you’ll gather a list of resources to illuminate your way. You’ll buy e-books, bookmark Twitter threads, and watch tons of YouTube videos. You’ll do this for weeks on end hoping to find that one secret to your first $100 dollar assignment. But how many hours will you spend creating content?

It does not matter to a client how much you know about writing. They will ask how much you have written in your niche.

A common requirement on job postings from companies seeking freelancers is proof of work in a particular niche. They want to see published pieces and therefore links to Google Docs do not count.

What’s my point?

If you want to succeed as a successful writer in your niche, start creating. Do it every day. It will be hard to count you out when you have 100 pieces of work published on different websites.

What difference can 100 days make? You can either choose to watch hundreds of hours of tutorials or accumulate a collection of published content on your preferred topics.

Reach out to publications in your niche and request to have content published there. Part of the creative journey is being able to write convincing emails to unlock guest posting opportunities (guest posting is not purely for link building). This skill will come in handy when you pitch your services to potential clients.

Successful people spend hours writing proposals, most of which never see the light of day or take years to bear fruits. This is the difference between creators and consumers. It takes hours of practice to attain success in all fields. You should not expect it to be any easier as a freelance writer. Roll up your sleeves and let’s get ready to rumble.
