Self Image Within Selfies

The beauty of self images, from reflections of oneself, to the way we want other to perceive us. The images chosen thoroughly depict me as a friendly and caring individual.

The first selfie used is one i took a few weeks ago when I went with 2 of my friends closests friends since middle school, we went hiking up McLaren park to help my friend take pictures for his journalism class. While hiking up there i still didn’t know what selfies i wanted to do, so without any preparation i asked my friend to take a selfie with me. At the time i thought it would a perfect time to take the selfie since the sun was reflecting behind us with the trees surrounding us. The image is unedited just as i like to be seen, with imperfections and natural. My friend has that awkward smile while i have a smirk just showing the good time we have together.

This first selfies portrays my identity as a friendly individual since usually when i go out i’m always with friends, but they aren’t just friends their close friends, the type your able to trust with your problems and issues.

This relates back to Seeing Ourselves Through Technology by Jill Walker where they say “The word filter has been used in many domains, but usually to describe a process where something is removed” I personally don't like using filters for that fact, since you can hide your true self within filters.

This selfie was taken on my b-day last year on the way to her final competition for drum majors, where i took a flower from the school and gave it to her when she finished. This selfie shows both of us having a slight smile, the low angle wasn’t intentional it was since we were limited in space from being in a small area. This is also all natural i took it without taking into consideration the background or the lighting or anything else, since the main focus was on us.

The concept of love is strong with this one, I could’ve spent the day with my family or friends but instead I decided to spend the day with her. She’s truly the reason why i ever started taking selfies of myself or with friends since i would always send them to her. The images coming up are a product of her doing. This selfie taken shows how compassionate and caring i can be towards an individual (Patricia/Her).

This image was taken after my friends had their v-ball game, it shows 2 of us cheesing and one of them with an awkward smile while the other has no idea we even took this. This image was taken to make her jealous, just like the other pictures no editing has gone into this image and it was taken in one go, nothing was done on purpose besides the posture, one sitting on my lap and the other grabbing my cheeks.

This image shows the strong connection i have with my group of friends since whenever we hangout were always having a good time, and it’s just an overall fun experience being with them. This selfies further depicts me as a trustworthy individual since my friends know they can depend on me.

This image shows me with 3 of my closests friends since high school and i’m not sure why i took the picture in the first place but all i know is that all 4 of us didn’t know how to react or smile while taking the picture. It was at school i think from the background of the image, and yet again nothing in this image was planned. We didn’t dress up or anything. The low camera angle was convenient for me since i’m not that tall compared to the rest, it allowed me to get everyone’s face in the picture. It’s also really bad quality due to my phone.

This image shows how caring i am as an individual, since to this day since i’m still keeping up with each one of thems even if they go to different schools around the country.

In Seeing Ourselves Through Technology by Jill Walker they say “because the look of a quick, filtered smartphone photo carries with it a sense of realism that documentary photographers may desire” This is why i like taking pictures with my phone since it’s easier and much quicker than taking out a whole ass Nicon camera

In conclusion all images chosen were used to show how the selfies taken depict me as a trustworthy and caring individual.
