The Fun Palace

Assessment Task 2A: Drawing and Notation

The technique of drawing that I chose is “a fun palace full of activities defined by pieces of architecture” by Cedric Price. The definition of Fun Palace was not just an ordinary building like we use to see. Moreover, Fun Palace was the capability of doing various situations and social activities that are done by human in the same time and place just as what Stanley Mathews said.

“The Fun Palace was not a building in any conventional sense, but was instead a socially interactive machine, highly adaptable to the shifting cultural and social conditions of its time and place”- Stanley Mathews

Fun Palace was originated by Cedric Price who was doing a collaboration with Joan Littlewood an avant-garde theatre producer. Through his technique of drawing, he has changed a city into a city that have a place where all people are doing interactions to each other. There were also many interactions between human inside a luxury palace. Below is his quote:

“The city is viewed like a condition enables the use and degree of attention afforded by the public to the activities of the site to vary according to the changing scale and intensity of use of a metropolitan region during the life-span of the Palace”-Cedric Price and Joan Littlewood

Personally, I was inspired by one of Cedric Price’s Fun Palace drawing below.

Based on my research, the strong focus in this drawing is how the people interacting with the building. With seeing this picture above, we can see a lot of people interacting each other in a space inside a building. However, there are some types and techniques which has been used by Cedric Price to draw. Furthermore, Cedric’s is using a one point of perspective just like the picture above.

For this assignment, I am trying to replicate his drawing and using his technique to produce my own drawing.

Figure 2: Drafts of Queen Victoria Building in A3. (Drawing by: Karin Setiawan)
Figure 4: The final result of my Fun Palace drawing in A2 (Drawing by: Karin Setiawan)

I chose Queen Victoria Building to be drawn because its design is like a palace and there are a lot of activities such as sightseeing, shopping, walking, chatting and reading. I chose one point perspective of Queen Victoria Building photographs with a lot of people who were busy with their own activity inside the photos. Then I printed them to help me to start making two A3 drafts of Queen Victoria Building with 2 different angles in pencil. Finally, for the final drawing, I used the combination of my 0.1 and 0.05 drawing pens in A2. I used 0.1 for outlining the important features of the building. However, I used 0.05 for smaller detail applied in my drawings.
