How do you develop as a leader? There are three main steps

Leaders develop through training, mentoring AND coaching.

In all roles in life, it’s better to get the fundamentals right before you try the more advanced practices.

When I started as a leader, I went on training for certain hard skills first (the fundamentals). Skills like:

These skills set me up for success and paved the way for me to be a great leader.

I’ve often had to revisit these skills, and I’m constantly going on training. I firmly believe you should never stop learning.

But you don’t need to wait until you have all the hard skills to find a mentor. (Besides, you will never run out of hard skills to learn!)

A mentor will help you and guide you to develop softer skills and competencies. Such as:

The right mentor will also be able to help you advance your career. They do this by introducing you to the right people and speaking up for you where necessary.

Coaching is about practising and refining your skills. A coach is more about telling, where a mentor will rather help you figure things out yourself.

As a leader, you should always be trying to improve yourself. It will make you a better leader, and help you have a greater positive impact on your team members.
