Is Introversion linked to Shyness?

Many people still believe that introversion and shyness are the same things. Are they really?

Introversion is a personality type where someone feels more comfortable focusing on their inner thoughts and ideas rather than external stimulants. They feel tired in large groups of people or social gatherings and avoid interaction with strangers whenever possible. Being alone and doing their favorite work makes them happy.

Shyness is an emotion rather than a personality type, similar to introverts, they also feel anxious or awkward in social situations, especially when they are with strangers, but the key difference is that introverts avoid crowds because they find small talks as non-productive and don’t like the idea of sharing all of their feelings and emotions to acquaintances or strangers, but they don’t hesitate to share the same with their close friends or family. Shyness on the other hand may be fear of judgment or lack of confidence, they want to, but fear and anxiety hold them back.

It is really hard to tell them apart as they would appear the same on the outside and are identical to normal eyes. Asking an introvert to open up more will do as good as asking an extrovert to spend more time alone.

Extroverts are the so-called smart, active people person that everyone admires. They like to stand out and to be at the center of attention. They are natural risk-takers and love to connect with people which triggers their dopamine levels and makes them happy. They would never miss a chance to party and are natural cheerleaders.

Society tends to be more or less designed for extroverts, being active or at the center of attention is often taken for granted to be analogous to intelligence and self-confidence. Being less talkative and expressing less is seen as a disorder that needs to be fixed.

The discrimination is based on the belief that quiet people tend to make fewer connections and may end up not getting any help when they need it the most. This may be true for people who are shy but it is not the case with introverts, they observe small details and are self-aware, they handpick their friends and form deep connections with them, and they don’t hesitate to ask for help from them.

Introverts know their way and can be the best version of themselves if they embrace their personality and accept who they are, ignoring the social judgment away that always surrounds them. Embrace who you are and love what you do, there is no need to connect with others if you don’t want to and live life to your fullest.
