Nigeria and the unfinished business of Wilberforce

Nigeria is a nation which was founded with a definite purpose, and endowed with a very clear mandate. Her greatness depends on the realization of this fact.

THE FACT OF A MANDATE

The foundation for this nation was laid by the British humanitarians who first came to our shores in 1841, in an expedition supported by the British government. They came in the spirit of William Wilberforce, and their mission was to extinguish slavery at the source, bring civilization to Africans, and thereby redeem the black race from every pit of degradation.

THE FACT OF AN UNFULFILLED MANDATE

The business of Wilberforce for the black race begun by these humanitarians is still unfinished. There is yet plenty of work to be done. The black race is still groaning under many different forms of degradation.

A VISION FOR THE FULFILLMENT OF THE MANDATE

The life of the great Yoruba man Samuel ajayi Crowther offers a standard which all those who strive according to this mandate should attempt to meet.

From the pit of degradation in the depths of a stinking slave ship, he was eventually raised to the greatest heights of eminence possible in his generation : A member of the English elite, a British lord (technically, as a bishop).

Therefore, we must aim at the highest global standards of achievement, in each of the areas in which we seek to elevate the black race.

A STRATEGY FOR THE FULFILLMENT OF THE MANDATE : KNOCK HEADS

Revealed by Samuel ajayi crowther, whose first act after his liberation was to knock the head of his former slave master.

First identify the various heads we need to knock. They are those heads which are still rising above our people, and keeping the black race in a state of degradation.

Recognize them through various indices used to measure human development in different areas:

Health indices

Socio-Economic indices

We need to knock all these heads.

The way to go is to formally declare war against each of these heads one after the other. Develop a well thought out grand strategy for each head, and utilize time proven battle tactics .

It is also important to note that this war is not the responsibility of the government alone, but Individuals of means and nongovernmental organizations can also play a significant role in fulfilling these goals.

When our nation stirs herself and rises to the task of knocking these heads, first within our own borders, then upon the continent, our nation will truly become the great light she is destined to be.
