Resonance

The best way to learn from others

There are lots of methods to succeed, plenty of great authors and thinkers who have had their lives and successes written about, or written about it themselves. The problem with trying to follow in their footsteps is that those methods and actions usually resonate best with that person, and whether it be a change in mindset or circumstances forcefully following that person’s ways will lead to a dead end.

For Isaac Newton an apple falling on his head was what was needed to finish his theory of a gravitational force, for you or me, an apple falling on our heads would mean a bit of pain followed by either cursing or boasting how we’re the next Newton because of this event. For Archimedes, a bath can mean coming up with a new principle, but for most of us, it’s just a place to clean ourselves and come up with perfect comebacks for arguments when it’s too late to matter.

So, does this mean that following another person’s footsteps is meaningless? That any attempt to learn from the best methods of others is a lesson in futility?

In the long run, yes. Even if you start on the same point as someone else, sooner or later you will have to diverge or risk standstill, and the key to how useful anything shared by another person is how long it takes you to diverge from their path.

The ability to learn from another person is ‘Resonance’. If empathy is the ability to glean how another person would feel given a particular set of circumstances. Resonance is the ability to glean the insights someone else has had given a particular set of circumstances. The greater the resonance, the closer you are to experiencing what that other person felt whilst following their path and methods.

So, when it comes to success don’t look for the most recommended or lauded and hope to mechanically apply whatever teaching or method they have experienced. You have to resonate with what they’ve taught, there should be a buzz, a clear feeling of ‘This is it!’.

There should be a Resonance.
