Behavior Assistants Work With Children Who Have Experienced Trauma

Behavior Assistants are part of the team that works with children who have experienced trauma, have behavior issues that hinder their growth in school and at home, or have disabilities that affect their behavior. I became a certified Behavior Assistant in 2011.

Behavior Assistants work in the mental health field in New Jersey, must hold a Bachelor’s Degree, must become certified, and then must re-certify yearly. Before my son became a Mentor/Behavior Assistant, I had never heard much about this field but after talking with him and doing some research, it seemed like a perfect fit with my Education Degree background.

If you have your Bachelor’s degree, there are three components to complete, with the first being Live Training. This consists of courses in BA Orientation, Positive Behavior Support, NJ Wraparound, Safety, Cultural Competence, DSM-V, and Developmental Tasks of Children and Teens. These were free one-day classes sponsored by Rutgers Behavioral Health, CSOCTraining@ubhc.rutgers.edu. Next is completing Core Competencies, and last is the online certification test. You must then be hired by a mental health agency that works with children and has licensed clinicians.

A Behavior Assistant will provide direct service to youth in-home and community of youth, implementing behavioral interventions. They work under the guidance of a licensed clinician who provides a Plan of Care which will address specific target behaviors. The BA will help the youth develop and practice positive coping strategies and techniques through face-to-face interventions and modeling effective coping strategies. To put this in shorter terms, they will model the behavior they want to see.

The agency I started with covered the state of New Jersey in most counties. We could choose how far we were willing to travel and worked as a sub-contractor, keeping track of our expenses for taxes. We had to write DAP Notes (Data, Assessment, and Plan) after each visit and at the end of the month, turn these in at a monthly meeting and receive our paycheck. We would be offered new cases that came up in our area and preferred age group and it was our choice to accept or not.
