Is The Fabric Of Society Changing?

How Do We Get Back On Track Before It Is Too Late

This piece is not a political one — not even in the slightest. But that being said, have you noticed how life, that is, society is changing? Ever since 2016, there is something in the air that is different. Either people have changed or people that we never heard from are popping up like mushrooms and are expressing themselves.

All of the things that make living on this blue marble awesome are in jeopardy and I think this change started as a result of the Presidential Race of 2016. Trump stunned everyone when he won the presidency and his time in the White House either revealed cracks in society or created them. I am not sure which. However, you have to admit that a lot of really strange and incredibly sad statements and thought patterns came from that administration.

Now, I am not blaming him. He is what he is. To say that he is solely responsible for the change is like blaming a dog for pooping on the carpet or getting mad at a 2nd grader for thinking that 4 X4 equals 89. How can you get mad?

But I think when the most powerful leader on the planet expresses thoughts that promote racism, misogyny, tribalism, dishonesty, mistrust of science and institutions, it tends to rub off on certain members of society.

We have never been more polarized as a nation. That being said tribal politics has always been with us but NEVER to the degree that we are seeing today. I don’t recall that kind of tribalism ever seeping into everyday life before.

I think that political polarization is having the side effect of eroding the greatest of human qualities — qualities like empathy, compassion, generosity, forgiveness, charity, acceptance, trust, friendship, tolerance and, more.

We are also even seeing it in our religious institutions. The percentage of people who give to religious causes has decreased. That could be because attendance at churches has declined. Whatever, the reason, that great human quality of generosity seems to be on the decline as well.

Recently, I ran a test on Facebook. I started a fundraiser to raise money for the prevention of suicide. I shared the fundraiser with all of my friends in hopes that they would help. You see, last year my brother Bill committed suicide. All my friends know this. I wanted to test to see if their caring gene would surface. I wanted to see if they would give to this worthwhile cause knowing that I have skin in the game and it would probably be very important to me. When completed, the fundraiser got only 3 donations from people — just me, and 2 other friends — out of 325 people. I don’t think that would have happened 10 years ago.

Another thing that I have noticed is the use of racial slurs has gone up. I have heard people around me use the “N” word so easily these days. You may think that I am naive or live under a rock but that never would have happened even 5 or 6 years ago in the community that I live in. When you call them out on it, they double down and tell me — “ I will say what I want when I want”.

In fact, I was at a restaurant once where a group of older gentlemen was discussing what they felt were the ills of society. While their discussion was kind of rambling and it was hard to discern where any one of them stood on any topic, one thing did stand out. They kept blaming African Americans — but they did not use those words if you know what I mean.

The manager came out from the kitchen after a few servers told him about the conversation. He told the guys to keep their voices down as he did not want to hear that kind of talk in his place. Plus, he said, “I have a very nice black family over there who would not appreciate this kind of talk”. The old guys responded with — you guessed it — “We will say what we want when we want”.

I would love to know if people agree with me. Do you see a change in society and people in general? Are we experiencing moral decay? Do you think it is temporary? Has it always been with us and just getting worse? Can we improve?
