What I learned about friendship from donating my kidney.

It was a beautiful Monday morning in the mountains of Colorado, and I had just finished blending up my kale smoothie when the phone rang, interrupting my John Prine radio sing along. Looking at the…

There are No Problems Only Options

Why options can show a path forward

So much of our time can be spent dealing with problems. Either caused by ourselves or others.

The trouble is the time we waste “in” and thinking about our problem is hardly productive. It consumes us and like a stick stuck in a stream, we stay there. The stream flows around us but we don’t move, nada. Stuck in the same spot as our problem. Hardly doing anything about it, is it?

What about instead of living in the problem we think “around” the problem and the options for dealing with it.

I’ve found by using that thought pattern alone it really can make a problem seem smaller. And thinking and talking through options in how to deal with a problem is a good way of moving things forward. And it takes away fear.

For example, you are finding writing hard. Too many distractions around you. Noisy children, partner with the TV blaring loudly. You can either let the irritation of all this consume you or you can think around your problem and how to deal with it. Banishing your children and partner to far off lands is not really an option here but I’ve no doubt some of us feel like it at times. It might be a solution to find a quiet place to write, use some headphones to drown them out, or talk with them about giving you some quiet time to work.

You could perhaps move your desk and laptop to a quiet room where you cannot be disturbed. Another idea would be perhaps to get up a bit earlier in the morning when no one is around and do your writing then if moving your writing area is not an option. Problems need creative thinking and options to get them solved or at the very least lessened greatly.

And this really applies to so many of the problems around us. Creative thinking can make a problem resolve into a workable solution and sometimes that solution can give a result that works really well and one that we prefer and gives us a new way of working and productivity.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help if there’s a problem. The viewpoints of others can give valuable input and new ideas to give you something to work with so you can move forward.

I have used writing as only one example of solving a problem but this thought pattern can apply to so many other issues in your life. Don’t think of it, think around it and your options to deal with it.

A problem thought “around” with options can very often be a problem solved.
